Volunteering here should be worth your time
Contributing here means working on a real problem, with serious people, for a mission with visible human consequences. The problems are unusual and the company is good. We try to enjoy building it.
You do not need to fit a job description to have something valuable to contribute.
People brought clinical expertise, research, technology, storytelling, design, law, ethics, strategy, lived experience, introductions, community access and time. Some contributed for years. Some helped solve one important problem. Some opened a door that changed what became possible.
This is how MyWhatIf was built. The Board, the Clinical Development Board, the leadership team and the contributor community all arrived that way.

There is more than one way to help build this
If you have expertise that could strengthen the work, tell us what you know and what you would like to help solve.
Clinical care, psychology, psychiatry, trauma, neuroscience, research, public health, AI and machine learning, engineering, product, design, data, privacy, security, ethics, law, fundraising, communications, community building, peer support, nonprofit operations, finance, strategy.
This is not a list of open roles. It is a description of the range of people who have been useful here.
Technologists, designers and product people can contribute to prototyping, AI engineering, software development, product thinking, UX, visual design, data analysis, testing, accessibility and research tools.
Work touching participant information or sensitive systems stays inside the Foundation's access controls. Volunteer contributions are scoped so that they never require it.
Clinicians, researchers, students, faculty, labs, hospitals and universities may be able to contribute to research design, measurement, literature review, clinical review, study site partnerships, student research, evaluation, grant collaboration, or introductions to other researchers and institutions.
Formal research partnership, authorship and study participation are separate arrangements with their own review, and are not implied by volunteering.
Sometimes the most valuable thing you can contribute is a connection.
You do not need technical expertise to help. An introduction to a hospital, a university, a researcher, a funder, a veterans organization, an employer or a clinical leader can change what becomes possible.
People embedded in veterans groups, student communities, peer support and trauma recovery organizations, cultural communities and health organizations can help us understand real needs, shape how an implementation would actually work, and connect us with local leaders.
Recruitment for research runs only through approved protocols, so that part is never handled by volunteers.
Writers, filmmakers, designers, photographers, animators, journalists, communicators and fundraisers can help explain the mission, document the work, build educational content and support campaigns.
Any story about a person is told only with that person's consent, on their terms.
Host a conversation that helps the mission grow.
You may already have a way to do this
Your university may already have a way for you to turn your expertise into impact.
Research placements, capstone projects, student clubs, design studios, engineering projects, public health programs, psychology and neuroscience research, social impact programs and communications projects can all be routes in. Where a practicum or internship is appropriate, it is arranged with the institution.
We cannot grant academic credit ourselves. Any credit or placement is your institution's decision.
If a professor, lab, department, student organization, innovation center or social impact office might be interested, bring us to them.
Your employer may fund the contribution you were going to make anyway.
Many employers offer ways for employees to contribute professional expertise or company resources to nonprofit work. If yours does, we would be glad to explore what could be useful.
Pro bono projects, employee volunteer programs, skills based volunteering, corporate social impact programs, research collaboration, technology or infrastructure credits, design and communications support, legal services, consulting, matching gifts, introductions.
Your team can volunteer too
Companies, universities, professional firms, labs and community organizations can contribute expertise together. That might be a focused pro bono sprint, a research collaboration, a student project, a skills based volunteer team, professional services support, technology support, or community implementation work.
Law firms, consultancies, accounting firms, design studios, technology companies, communications agencies, research groups and healthcare organizations sometimes take on this kind of work pro bono, at reduced fee, as sponsored professional work, or as a staff volunteer project.
We do not automatically assume free work. Start a conversation and we will find a structure that is fair.
Interested in supporting other Heroes?
MyWhatIf is developing peer support, Hero to Hero matching and community layers. As those programs expand, we expect opportunities for people with relevant lived experience and peer support skills to contribute.
Peer contributors are peers. They are not therapists or clinicians, and the role is defined and supported accordingly. Nothing here is open yet, so this route is an expression of interest.
You do not need to be an expert yet
Students and early-career contributors bring research, energy, technical skills, design, writing, community building and fresh perspectives. What matters is curiosity, commitment and contributing responsibly. Have an hour a week? You can help us train and improve our models using our dedicated software.
We read every inquiry. We cannot place everyone, and what we can offer depends on what the work needs at the time.
You do not have to rearrange your life
Not every format is available for every contribution. Tell us what you have and we will be straight about what fits.
What you may get back
Serious mission. Good people. Interesting problems. We enjoy building it.
We cannot promise career outcomes, and we do not pretend that contributing here is a credential.
What we value
This work involves trauma, privacy, science and people in difficult circumstances. Good intentions are not enough on their own. We need contributors who respect privacy, boundaries, evidence, ethics, participant dignity and appropriate oversight.
Contributing here is mission participation, and your expertise and time are worth something. Some work is volunteer, some is pro bono, some is paid, contract, academic collaboration or institutional partnership. Those are different things and we do not blur them. If the right contribution requires a different structure, we can talk about that too.
